Layered Landscapes
April 22nd, 2022
Layered Landscapes is a pen plotter artwork minted as an NFT on the fx(hash) platform. This piece came together as a result of my desire to explore NFT technology and to share my work with a broader audience. Minting my first NFT was an entirely new and exciting experience, as was connecting with a community of collectors and artists who were producing and sharing their own plotted versions of my work.
Composition
With this piece I wanted to work within the technical abilities that I had at the time. I hadn't yet developed code to hide lines behind other shapes. To work within this constraint I developed a landscape scene using halftone printing techniques, generating different shades by controlling the spacing between the lines. I created a variety of hills and fog using principles of positive and negative space. The piece includes two sky variations, one with straight lines that decrease in density toward the horizon and another made of concentric circles representing the sun on the horizon. The foreground includes between one to seven evergreen trees, adding a unique focal point to each mint.
The artwork was created to display as a digital representation of the plotted piece. The format was set at 6" x 4", to be compatible with the AxiDraw MiniKit 2 plotter I was using at the time. Collectors can download the artwork as an SVG file for use with most modern pen plotters.
Reception
The reception of this piece was very successful. At the time of minting in April 2022 the NFT market was very hot and with only 75 editions priced at 1 Tez ($3.30 USD at the time) it proved to be very attractive to collectors. The release of this piece and my 2nd NFT release, Truchet Towers, was discussed on the Waiting To Be Signed podcast Episode 18 "Building Art". I think their discussion of the NFT drop process is an accurate analysis and reflects what I was learning about the collector and flipping economy of the NFT market at this time.
Editions of Layered Landscapes are available for purchase on the fx(hash) Marketplace.
